alberta conservation tillage society ii (ACTS II)
The Alberta Conservation Tillage Society II promotes the advancement of sustainable soil management and continued improvement in agricultural cropping methods.
ACTS II is a grassroots, volunteer, producer organization. Incorporated under the Societies Act in 1978 as the Alberta No-Till Farmers Association, it originally focused on tillage practices to reduce soil erosion. The society changed its name to the Alberta Conservation Tillage Society (ACTS) in 1986, signalling a broadening of the reduced tillage mandate. The new mandate focused on the development and implementation of innovative tillage systems to deal with the growing array of soil quality and conservation concerns related to intensive tillage.
ACTS became ACTS II in 2005, denoting a further evolution of the society's mandate. It determined to maintain a primary focus on practical soil stewardship but also recognized the need to be involved in many of the broader issues related to protenction of all of Alberta's agricultural ecosystems. Building on its new vision, core values and land ethic, ACTS II is committed to action on four fundamental challenges facing agriculture in Alberta:
1) the Leadership Challenge
2) the Advocacy Challenge
3) the Stewardship Challenge, and
4) the Awareness Challenge
ACTS II invites individuals and organizations who identify with its vision, values and land ethic to connect ACTS II to act on these important challenges, to secure the health and sustainability of Alberta's soil resources and agricultural ecosystems, for the benefit of future generations.
